Dental implants are titanium roots that are implanted into bone to permanently* replace missing teeth. For an in depth description and history of dental implants please click here
The only permanent alternative to an implant is a bridge. Bridges go over natural teeth on either side of the absent tooth which are prepared (made smaller) to make room for ceramic material to be placed. Bridges are excellent in areas where the remaining teeth have fillings and healthy roots. When teeth are untouched or have root problems, implants are a better choice. At Castledowns Dental both options are available and will be recommended on a case by case basis.
Implants can be placed anywhere there is enough bone.** At Castledowns Dental we strive to be on the cutting edge of technology. Implants used at the clinic are Swiss made surgical titanium similar to which is used in joint replacements. Onsite we have a cone beam computed tomography machine (CBCT) which creates a three dimensional model (x-ray) of your mouth. With this model the implant surgery can be completed virtually on a computer. After virtual surgery, a surgical guide is created to transfer the ideal implant placement into your mouth. Technology allows for any problems during surgery to be encountered on a computer instead of the real world which in turn reduces surgical complications and increases success rates. After surgery the implant must heal before a crown (tooth) can be placed over top of the implant to complete the process.
A typical timeline for a restored (crowned) implant including extraction of a natural tooth is:
1) Day one the tooth is removed and a socket graft is placed to ensure good bony healing.
2) Four months later a CBCT is taken and bone is assessed. If healing is acceptable the virtual surgery and surgical guide are completed.
3) Two week later the implant is surgically placed.
4) Four months after surgery a digital impression of the implant is taken.
5) One day later the crown is placed on the implant and it can now be used to chew. The previously extracted tooth has been permanently replaced.
Total time from extraction to tooth is about nine months. This is an average and case time can vary.
*According to meta-analysis implants have a long term survival rate of 76% (16-20 years). This means 1 in 4 implants fail in a 16-20 year time period.
**Bone grafts and sinus lifts are required before implantation if bone is not in good enough quantity or quality. This can be done at the clinic or at an Oral Surgeon depending on the severity of the bony defect.
